Dental Crowns from Scottsdale, AZ Prosthodontist
A crown is a full coverage restoration that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations. Teeth need crowns due to large restorations that weaken the tooth, large cavities that weaken the tooth, root canal treated teeth, fractured teeth and teeth that need correction in size, shape or color.
Crowns are made from a variety of materials. Porcelain crowns are the most popular because they are tooth colored. Crowns for back teeth can be made of metal to prevent fracture in people that clench or gring their teeth. Crowns are highly durable and will last many years. Regular cleanings are recommended to maintain the restoration and check for any signs of new cavities. Crowns are made to improve the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
Reasons for crowns:
What does getting a crown involve?
The crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include preparing the tooth for the crown and taking an impression that will be used fabricate the final crown. An impression will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is ready to be placed.
Dr. Bleeker will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to ideal shape and form for the new crown. A temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.
At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.
You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental cleanings to check your new crown.
