Three Ways to Prevent Periodontal Disease

Jul 30 • 1 minute read

Gum disease affects millions of people each year but it can be prevented. You can improve the health of your teeth and gums by visiting your dentist or periodontist once a year and performing simple self-care practices at home.

Brush and Floss Every Day

The ideal way to prevent gum disease is to brush and floss your teeth at least once every day. Brushing and flossing at night before you go to bed gets rid of debris in between your teeth and reduce the number of bacteria growing in your mouth.

Rinse With An ADA-Approved Mouthwash After Eating

To keep bacteria to a minimum, carry a small bottle of ADA-approved mouthwash. Rinse your mouth after every meal to keep your breath fresh and your gums free of irritation. Brushing too often can start to wear away the enamel on your teeth. Using a mouthwash protects your teeth and gums and is more convenient than a toothbrush when you're away from home.

Replace Sugary Snacks With Healthier Foods

Replace sugary snacks with healthier foods that boost your immune system and keep infection and tooth decay at bay. Fresh fruits and vegetables also work to clean your teeth and strengthen gums when you chew.
