Do Your Teeth Require Restorative Treatment?

Apr 8 • 2 minute read

We at Villa Canyon Prosthodontics would like to take a moment to thank our exceptional patients. We look forward to continuing service for all of your dental health needs.

For those looking into dental restoration--we would like to provide you with some basic information to help ease any concerns you might have prior to consulting with Dr. Bleeker.

What is Dental Restoration?

When considering dental restoration--one might get lost in the large umbrella that dental restoration covers. Dental restoration “is a treatment to restore the function, integrity, and morphology of missing tooth structure from tooth decay or external trauma as well as to the replacement of such structure supported by dental implants.”[1]

While the definition can be quite a mouthful--in more basic terms, dental restoration refers to the different ways that your prosthodontist “can replace missing teeth or repair missing parts of the tooth structure.”[2]

A Want or a Need?

When considering dental restorative treatment, patients could find themselves asking do I want this treatment or do I need this treatment?

However, in reality the split between a want or a need with dental restoration is not an or, but an and. Dental restoration focuses on both the function and esthetic of teeth or the individual tooth. Function and aesthetic go hand-in-hand, so dental restoration often addresses both the wants and needs of a patient’s smile.

In addition, there are two different types of dental restoration: direct and indirect. Direct restoration refers to a “restoration fabricated inside the mouth,” such as a filling in a cavity and indirect restoration is “fabricated outside the mouth,” such as a customized crown.[3]
