Scottsdale Prosthodontist Treats TMJ

Jul 12 • 1 minute read

Your jaw is constantly moving. Any time you move your mouth to speak, chew, or change your facial expression, your jaw moves up, down, or at a slight angle. There are several things that can cause the joints of your jaw to become inflamed and sore. The result is known as TMJ and can be diagnosed and treated by your local Scottsdale prosthodontist, Dr. Michael Bleeker.

What Is TMJ?

Pain located within or near the joint of the jaw is known as TMJ. The temporomandibular joint is made up of the muscles and connective tissues that connect your jaw to your temporal bones. Any time the joint becomes stressed or overworked, inflammation and pain can occur.

Symptoms of TMJ

In addition to the pain and discomfort when you speak, chew or move your jaw, you may also hear distinct popping and grinding noises. Because of the joint's close proximity to the ear, you may also begin to hear ringing and buzzing noises as well.

Symptoms may appear over time. They may be most prominent in the mornings when you wake up. This can mean that you are clenching or grinding your teeth as you sleep. Grinding is often a sign of stress and should be discussed with your local Scottsdale prosthodontist.

Treatment Options

Self-care is often the most effective form of treatment for TMJ. Avoid chewing gum or hard foods that put excessive pressure on the joint. If your joint pain is associated with a chronic condition like arthritis, you can apply ice to reduce the swelling and relieve the pain. If the cause of your discomfort has to do with grinding your teeth while you sleep, your Scottsdale prosthodontist may recommend wearing a night guard to prevent you from putting stress on the joints of your jaw. Surgery is only considered as a last resort in most cases.
