It's fair to say that everyone would like to be the proud owner of a ravishing smile.
But the true measure of that smile isn't how white or even how straight your teeth are. The health of your mouth depends on the health of your gums. And, like all matters of health, improving gum health requires a proactive approach.
To underscore the urgency, the National Institutes of Health notes that many adults in the United States have some form of gum disease, which begins when plaque accumulates under and along the gum line. Plaque can lead to gingivitis and even periodontitis, an aggressive form of gum disease.
Take the bite out of gum disease
Fortunately, gum disease is preventable, but only if you're ready to make a concerted effort to improve the health of your gums by:
· Brushing your teeth twice a day and/or after every meal.
· Using a fluoride toothpaste (although the flavor is up to you).
· Flossing at least once a day.
· Ceasing the use of tobacco products, which can exacerbate gum disease.
· Getting regular examinations and cleanings from your dentist.
When patients visit Dr. Michael Bleeker, they know he will encourage them to demonstrate how they brush and floss their teeth, too. After they do so, he often makes a small suggestion that can add up to big benefits in his patients' gum health.
