4 Preventative Tips For Periodontitis

Written by Aug 13 • 1 minute read

Periodontitis is caused by the unchecked growth of bacteria found in the mouth. As plaque builds between the teeth, bacteria flourishes and can begin to eat away at the delicate enamel of the teeth. It can also start to irritate the gums. This leads to both gingivitis and periodontitis. Aside from visiting your prosthodontist once a year, the following tips are also beneficial.

Reduce Your Intake of Sweets

Bacteria thrive in a sugary environment and can lead to gum disease. Reducing the number of sweets you consume will dramatically decrease the number of bacteria in your mouth. Replace sweets with fresh fruit and veggie snacks.

Rinse Your Mouth After Meals

After meals, rinse your mouth with an ADA approved mouthwash or at least with warm water. This reduces the amount of debris between your teeth and helps to control the number of bacteria in your mouth and prevents gum disease.

Brush and Floss Daily

Brush and floss your teeth daily to prevent plaque bacteria growth and reduce the buildup of plaque that accumulates around your teeth. Brushing your teeth in the morning and evening removes debris that gets lodged between the teeth and strengthens gum tissues.

Eating A Healthy Diet Prevents Gum Disease

Eating a healthy diet helps to keep the tissues in your mouth strong and resilient. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain natural enzymes that help to control the growth of bacteria and gum disease.
